What is a vihuela? Some would say, "Five dollars just like in town..." But really it is a small guitar-like instrument with 12 strings. It features six unison courses tuned in fourths similar to a 12 string guitar. The exact tuning is a bit of a mystery. Luis Milan said to tune the first string "As high as it will go." The manuscripts for the era were in tablature form similar to what is in use today. Pavan by Luis Milan is from his "El Maestro" written in 1535. The main challenge in arranging it for mandolin is that the vihuela is a plucked instrument and I am simulating it with a plectrum. Also the mandolin doesn't have as much sustain as a vihuela and there are many places that some notes are held over while other notes are played. This can make for some awkward fingerings. In any case it a nice piece. Enjoy... Listen to Pavan by Milan
